What’s the difference between theatre acting and acting in tv and movies?

I’ve always wondered if the acting methods are the same in theater and in tv and film. I’ve noticed that the actors overact in theater and people think it’s good acting, but when they overact in movies and on tv, people think it’s bad. Is there a difference?
